Honeymoon Part I :: Santo Domingo

Posted on Oct 21, 2011

Our main honeymoon destination was Las Terrenas on the Samaná peninsula of Dominican Republic. The closest airport for us to fly into is in Santo Domingo, so we figured we’d do some exploring around the nation’s capital for a day. Christopher Columbus founded this city in the late 1400’s and many of the buildings still stand today. We stayed at Hotel Atarazana. a super quaint 6 room hotel located in the heart of the Colonial Zone. The five century old buildings were pretty spectacular, but overall Santo Domingo is just a hot mess. Lots of poverty and overcrowding. It really made us thankful for what we have. Things like trash pickup, that most of us take for granted, are virtually non-existent in Santo Domingo. Garbage is thrown out of windows, piled on the streets and blanketing the beaches. I know what you’re thinking….what a romantic honeymoon, right ;) ? Actually we couldn’t have asked for a better honeymoon and we don’t regret our short visit to Santo Domingo. The next day we traveled to the beautiful Samaná peninsula for the remainder of our trip. Check out ‘Part II’ at the bottom.
